Batang Pinoy 2019 National Championships Successfully Open

Puerto Princesa – Bad weather failed to deter the successful opening of Batang Pinoy 2019 National Championships at Ramon V. Mitra Sports Complex, Puerto Princesa Palawan. It was attended by Philippines Sports Commission (PSC), headed by Chairman William I. Ramirez, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor M. Briones and Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong Go.” Governor Jose Chaves Alvarez, Puerto Princesa City Mayor Lucilo R. Bayron, DepEd MIMAROPA Regional Director Benjamin D. Paragas, Batang Pinoy 2018 National Gold Medalist for swimming Mary Sophia R. Manantan, Badminton Tournament Director Judith Brosula and some other special guests like Koronadal City Mayor Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena and movie action star Robin Padilla were present during the occasion.

“Dapat gawin ang sports bilang propesyon”,  DepEd Sec. Leonor Briones challenged the athletes and coaches in her speech. She said that it is not bad to take highly technical and vocational courses, but children must also understand that engaging in the sports profession receives a higher salary, much higher than those having a doctorate degree.

Briones also announced the construction of Philippines Sports Academy through the initiative of PSC Chairman Ramirez to strengthen more the ability of the athletes and to encourage children to go into sports. This years’ Batang Pinoy National Championships registered 6,223 athletes coming from 252 participating local government units (LGUs) with 1,369 coaches.

Koronadal City Mayor Atty. Eliordo U. Ogena, on the other hand, attended the opening program of the said sporting events to show his full support to the Koronadal team. He also met with the coaches and their parents to find out their needs not only during the competition but also during the practices. Further, Mayor Ogena said, that in order to realize one of the eight (8) core values of the city which is “Competitiveness”, it is important to address the desires of the players as a motivating factor to boost their morale to compete. He also vowed to increase the cash incentive to Php5, 000 for the gold, Php3, 000 for silver and Php2, 000 for bronze.

Joining Mayor Ogena is City Councilor Bernardo Hinay while the entire athlete delegates were spearheaded by City Sports Coordinator Jonari Javellana and DepEd Sports Supervisor Napoleon Comichu.

Batang Pinoy 2019 national championships opened on August 25 and will end on the 31st.
