February 18, 2020

Lectures on African Swine Fever (ASF) were conducted for meat vendors and ‘lecherous’ here in the city of Koronadal.  According to Dr. Charlemagne Calo of the City Veterinary Office who spearheaded the activity said that our meat dealers must be informed on the fundamental facts regarding ASF which is currently considered as one of the fears of the consumers.

Recently, news about ASF has brought great anxiety to the people even more to the local hog raisers for the devastating effect in the industry.  However, the personal visit of the Department of Agriculture (DA) Sec. William Dar to the city has also assured the hog raisers of financial assistance with the amount of Php 5,000 each infected pig.  The said monetary aid can be claimed at DA Region XII provided that the case shows documentary evidence.

Further, Sec. Dar commended the city government of Koronadal for a quick action to contain the possible ASF fast contamination. This involves the implementation of strict monitoring in all meat vans and hogs entering and passing through the city. Aside from this, the city veterinary personnel also conducted visitation and coordination to all swine raisers to ensure the safety of their hogs.

Earlier, Dr. Calo explained that the public should not worry about ASF because it does not infect humans and besides the government is extensively working to prevent its widespread infection.

Meanwhile, City Mayor Eliordo Ogena appealed to all meat vendors and ”lecherous to be more vigilant to stop the possible damages by the disease in the swine industry.
